Domestic Violence Experts Worried as Chris and Rihanna Unite

As a domestic violence expert I am worried and very concerned about this music reunion.

After seeing this on the news and now reading this article, I had to pass it along. For the last several years I have been driven to help victims of abuse or domestic violence. Women and Men. I’m not convinced Chris Brown has learned his lesson or has changed in light of his actions and tweets after the Grammy’s. Now I’m even more concerned Rihanna, does not understand her position, as a role model to others, and as an abused woman.

I have blogged many times about how victims, continue to leave only to return. The average split up between couples is 7. Rihanna, set a great example, at the beginning, for women everywhere when she and Chris split, and did not back down to pressure.

Music is one thing, a career is another, but for these two, I believe it’s dangerous. I am not convinced either of them will benefit emotionally from this reunion.

You can still see and feel the rage Chris still has inside. I just hope Rihanna, is strong enough to keep this relationship at arms length.

Fans may have been shocked upon hearing Rihanna and Chris Brown had reconciled (on the mic at least), but domestic violence experts weren’t.

The release of the exes’ collaborative single, “Birthday Cake (Remix),” was a jolt to many who remember the pictures of Rihanna’s battered face from the pre-Grammy incident three years ago. Reps for both sides, however, have said repeatedly that the two are just friends.

Advocates said they wouldn’t be surprised if the match soon goes from co-artists to couple, however.

“I don’t think it’s unusual that a couple would get back together after a period of time,” said Ellyn Loy, the director of clinical services at the House of Ruth in Maryland. “Statistics show generally that half of women leave and half go back a number of times before they make a final decision about the relationship.”

Regardless, experts said, even being friends could turn into a bad situation for the pop stars.

Experts cautioned that Rihanna, 24, should look for warning signs — if Brown, 22, becomes controlling, jealous or aggressive toward her, verbally or physically.

Rita Smith, executive director of National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said she didn’t believe Brown seemed that reformed, judging by his reaction to fan criticism and media scrutiny of his performance at the Grammys. Many people were unhappy about seeing a performer on the show who had a record of domestic violence.

After the show, Brown tweeted, “HATE ALL U WANT BECUZ I GOT A GRAMMY Now! That’s the ultimate F— OFF!”

“The response was fairly belligerent and didn’t really indicate that he had changed much in the several years since the assault,” Smith said.

Both Smith and Loy said they’re crossing their fingers that things work out differently for the celebrity couple — or not-couple.

“I think it’s possible they can be friends, and however they’re involved again, whether it’s as intimate partners or as good friends or as professional associates, I hope that he will continue to treat her with respect,” Smith said.

At the very least, Loy said she hopes it will have people talking about domestic violence — and how to prevent it.

“Sometimes what it does is raise the consciousness around the issue. My hope would be that there’s a lot of schools and teen groups talking about what do you think this means, do you think this is a good thing, do you think it is a bad thing?” she said. “I think that’s always a good thing.”

My husband and I have been to Vegas numerous times and we have never run across this issue, but as the economy continues to stagnate, people and companies push even harder to make money just to stay afloat.

Hidden cameras have been a blessing in so many instances through out the world. Sometimes exposing cheaters, sometimes sharing wonderful images of places and things we might not have ever seen. This time we have first hand knowledge of a scam which could affect any traveler, and not just in Vegas. Read on:

Taxicabs are a lifeline for southern Nevada’s tourism industry, transporting thousands of visitors from the airport to Strip properties each day.

But time and time again, riders are taken there by cabs heading south through the Airport Connector tunnel, a route which allows drivers to charge more.

The long hauling problem is one of the biggest challenges the Nevada Taxicab Authority’s new administrator, Charles Harvey, faces.

When he took the post in May, Harvey knew his top priority was taking on the issue.

“One of the first things I wanted to do was take a closer look at it and try and gauge how much of a problem it actually was,” Harvey said.

So Harvey and others with the TA started taking rides from the airport to the Strip and back, posing as everyday riders.

“On occasion we have been on the recipient end of long hauling, but more times than not we’ve had a fair ride,” Harvey told FOX5.

A fair ride meaning the most direct route.

For example, Harvey says on a trip from McCarran to the Bellagio, the driver should take Swenson to Tropicana to Las Vegas Boulevard.

However, a taxi driver can take an alternative route, as long as he or she asks the passenger.

“The statute says that the driver cannot take a passenger on a longer route than necessary unless the passenger requests it,” Harvey said.

When that doesn’t happen, it hurts the entire industry, especially other drivers.

“The people that are long hauling are making the honest cab driver look bad,” said driver Brandon Sparling.

Sparling says long hauling can sometimes cause more long hauling.

When dishonest drivers are earning more money, it puts pressure on honest drivers to keep up with fare averages, which some companies demand.

“If you don’t keep up with the average, you get suspended or even fired after a while, and those guys make it tough for the guys who aren’t long hauling to keep up with the average and most likely keep a job,” Sparling told FOX5.

FOX5 went undercover, taking several rides from the airport to the Bellagio to see how prevalent long hauling is.

Drivers have until the intersection at Wayne Newton Boulevard and Paradise to ask if a passenger wants to take the Airport Connector tunnel.

Once we arrived there on our first trip, our driver did not ask the question, and turned south.

It was only after the driver made the turn that he said the freeway was faster.

According to Google Maps, he’s right; taking the freeway is faster, but only by about a minute.

However, it’s also longer – by almost three additional miles – increasing the fare to $26.10.

Our ride back from the Bellagio to the airport was $13.10, almost half the price of the first trip.

That’s because on our return trip, our driver took the direct route, via Tropicana and Swenson.

Drivers hear the same long hauling story from passenger after passenger.

“In the last week I’ve had three different customers from the Platinum Hotel complain about being long hauled from the airport,” Sparling, said.

In 2011, the Taxicab Authority received about eleven-hundred long hauling complaints.

Harvey believes there’s even more cases they don’t hear about.

That’s why the TA is trying to get more information to the passengers, putting up signs letting them know their rights.

And Harvey says he will continue to run undercover stings.

“I think it’s been a deterrent… and I think the more of these proactive steps that we take, the less this problem will be out there,” Harvey told FOX5.

We filed a complaint with Frias Transportation Management – the parent company which manages Virgin Valley Cab – concerning the car that took us the long way.

The company did its own investigation.

John Hickman, the Chief Operating Officer, told FOX5 the driver in this case had a history of violating company policies, and that he has since been terminated.

Hickman also gave FOX5 a full refund.

Continually making excuses for their partner

Unexplained injuries

Change in social habits

Worried they aren’t doing enough to please their partner

Most of this is just common sense, but I know as a parent we sometime need a jolt to remind us of the never ending dangers our teenagers face, especially in the early dating years. This goes for girls and boys, since each suffer or can suffer from an abusive relationship.

I firmly believe dating teenagers should understand some unspoken rules about building relationships and should never assume they will never be in a violent relationship. As in adult partnerships our teenagers should learn to recognize the abuse and know how to defend themselves.

Although some rapes do come at the hands of strangers, local victim advocates say the vast majority of rapes in Canyon County and elsewhere are committed by men the victims already know, including boyfriends and husbands.

“It’s a big misconception that rapes are committed by strangers,” said Yolanda Matos, executive director of Valley Crisis Center in Nampa.

“Most are committed by intimate partners or someone they know. And we have found that 95 percent of women that come through our doors with domestic violence will disclose that were raped by that intimate partner.”

Control and power

Rape is used to humiliate the victim, to establish control over them, explained Matos of the Valley Crisis Center.

In relationships where verbal and physical abuse are common, rape becomes the ultimate way to exert power, she said.

Kim Ivacek, executive director of Advocates Against Family Violence in Caldwell, said rape and domestic abuse is a “learned behavior” — noting that most rapists either witnessed rape or were themselves victims. The most recent cases, committed in the presence of children, are especially disturbing, she said, because they continue the cycle of violence.

“You don’t just get up one morning and decide you’re going to rape. This is part of a cycle that has to be stopped,” Ivacek said.

Education

One way to end the cycle of rape and violence is for people to talk about it openly and honestly, so the community can admit the problem and seek solutions, Matos said. For most people, it’s easier to perpetuate the misconception that rape is committed by strangers, she said.

“People feel more comfortable believing strangers commit rape, not somebody who’s supposed to love you. It’s easier for society to deal with,” she said. “There’s a taboo. People don’t want to talk about healthy sex, much less rape and sexual assault.”

Education may be key. Rape education has traditionally focused on “stranger danger”-type prevention, including safety awareness and self-defense, said Rebecca Lovelace, executive director of the Nampa Family Justice Center.

Although “stranger danger” is still important, Lovelace said, people who work with victims of sexual assault — such as police and social workers — are getting better at addressing rape as a component of abusive relationships. And as more people become educated about the realities of rape, they are changing the way rape is perceived in society as a whole, she said.

Fred іѕ nоt а bad person. In fact, hе wаѕ јuѕt uninformed, јuѕt аѕ mаnу men (and women) whо ѕtіll thіnk thе ѕаmе wау hе uѕеd to. Tоо mаnу people tооk safety fоr granted аnd hаvе suffered mayor incapacitating physical injuries, emotional trauma аnd еvеn death, whіlе attempting tо resist оr escape frоm аn unexpected attacker. But іt doesn’t hаvе tо bе thаt wау fоr уоu аnd уоur family.

But thе Pepper Gel mаdе іt vеrу easy tо defend mуѕеlf аnd mу wife thаt night”.”God, bоth оf уоu соuld hаvе bееn dead bу now!”, mу wife told him, wіth а worried lооk іn hеr face. Fred continued: “We rеаllу owe оur life tо thаt lіttlе ѕеlf defense products conversation wе hаd а couple оf months ago, аnd tо thоѕе cheap but rеаllу powerful spray products I didn’t knоw wе needed ѕо much!”. “That іѕ absolutely right”, mу wife interrupted him, “but mоѕt оf all, уоu owe іt tо yourself, Fred. On December 30, 2011 my friend, Bill Basilone, was murdered, execution style, and his murderers were caught because hidden spy cameras were installed. Not only outside his bar, but all along the street, outside of other establishments, where his bar is located.

Very sad day indeed, for me and my whole family. He was a childhood friend, who took over his fathers tavern, which has been part of my home town for over 60 years. The city is Farrell, Pa, just north of Pittsburgh.

To best describe this tavern would be to align it with Cheers, a good old hang out, with great prices, great food, and always someone there you knew. Of coarse the owner, who worked 6 days a week and lived above the bar would greet you. Sometimes with a smile and sometimes not, but because he was your friend that was part of the charm.

On Friday night at closing time, with only one customer left in the bar, Bill heard a knock at the front door. Always locking the door around closing time he went to check who could be knocking at that time of night. As he went outside, he heard a ruckus which prompted him to go around the corner, were he was met by a couple punks, who in the beginning only wanted his money, but in a flash proceeded to shoot him. Hitting him in the leg with the  first shot, Billy turned and ran, but not fast enough, as he was shot a second time, which caused him to fall, these hoodlums came up to him and literately executed him. They shot him 3 more times as they were standing over him!!

Hidden Spy Cameras tell the story

How do I know all of this? Because his hidden spy cameras and the surveillance cameras installed up and down the street told the whole story. From beginning to end, these thugs were tapped walking up and down the street, for hours. Checking out different bars in the area, deciding which one would be more profitable and probably easier to rob. Sadly, they chose Basilones.

Had it not been for these hidden spy cameras which everyone had the sense to put in, these punks would still be at large. But it only took the police 2 days to make an arrest and put these murderers behind bars!    Amen

RIP Bill Basilone, you were one of a kind, and like so many who have had their life shortened due to needless violence, you will be missed.

Make self defense a priority this year, with domestic violence rising, and police help diminishing, self defense should become your only new years resolution. I have read too many reports this past holiday season about  abuse being more rampant, an definitely more aggressive than ever before. Not only is the economy causing an extra strain on households, but add Christmas into the mix, and our expectations of expensive gift giving and receiving, and the stress level has skyrocketed. Thus causing the already badly bruised family to become battered even without abuse.

Defend Yourself Against Domestic Violence

By definition, domestic violence is a repetition of behavior, consisting of assaulting and coercive actions, which can be physical, sexual and or psychological. It can also be economic coercion, that an adult or an adolescent uses to intimidate their intimate partner.

Do Abused Victims need Self Defense?

Every woman man and teen should be aware of potentially dangerous relationships, and take control of their safety and self defense. Below are some familiar statistics which can remind all of us why making self defense a PRIORITY is so important.

* About 4,000 women die every year due to domestic violence. That is approximately 11 women a day murdered by someone they knew!

* 75% of these deaths occurred when the women tried to leave the relationship or after the relationship ended.

*30% of Americans say they know someone who has been physically hurt by their husband in the past year.

* One out of every 3 women will be abused in their lifetime.

* The number one cause to injured women is abuse.

* A woman is more likely to be killed by a male partner or former partner than any other person.

* Women account for more than 85% of the victims of domestic violence.

* Race is not a factor when it comes to domestic violence cases.

* A really sad fact is 73% of male abusers were abused as children.

* The average times women leave a relationship because they have been abused is 7. On average that means they went back 6 times.

Women must learn to protect themselves, take control of their safety. Fear is the number one reason women return to the abusive relationship, that and they have nowhere to go. There are so many areas  we need to address as a nation to help abused women and men, but if we can start anywhere I believe it’s with the individual. Give them something they can rely on to get them out of a bad situation securely. Making  self defense a priority should be their number one objective and this years only resolution
